Description
Heavy are the elements. The body is full but buoyant and the mouthfeel traverses a lunar landscape. The dry mineral quality anchors a dreamy licorice floral aroma.
Produced May 10-11, 2022 and roasted by Mr. Soup on November 18, 2022. From Jian Ou city in Fujian Province. It’s a one bud, three-to-four leaf pick of the Qi Dan cultivar growing at 2,500 feet. Qi Dan is considered to be one of the original rock tea cultivars.
The original Chinese name for this tea is "Da Hong Pao" ( Big Red Robe). It’s also called “Yan Cha” (Rock Tea). Da Hong Pao, Big Red Robe, Rock Tea – all the same thing.
There are six “mother bushes” of Da Hong Pao in Wuyi, Fujian China. Originally, there were four (numbered one through four, left to right). The now fifth plant is a repaired versions of number one and the now sixth plant is a repaired version of number two. Plant “number six” is the Qi Dan cultivar. All Qi Dan cultivars growing in the area are direct cuttings from this plant.

4 grams | 10-12 oz water | 195°F | Steep 4 min.
Traditional Steeping
– Use 6 grams of tea in a 150ml teapot or gaiwan and boiling water.
10 seconds rinse (discard this steep)
1st Steep – 20 seconds
2nd Steep – 15 seconds
3rd Steep – 45 seconds
4th Steep – 90 seconds
5th Steep – 3 minutes
